While attending Christopher Newport University, Hutchinson interned for Republican Senator Ted Cruz during the summer of 2016 and for Republican US House of Representatives whip Steve Scalise during the summer of 2017.

What transpired before January 6
Hutchinson said in her sworn testimony on June 28 that she overheard discussions about Oath Keepers and Proud Boys when Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani was there and the Save America March was being planned. For their claimed participation in the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, some leaders of both groups were eventually charged with seditious conspiracy. Hutchinson said that Meadows and Giuliani both asked for presidential pardons. She earlier advised the committee that the politicians Matt Gaetz, Andy Biggs, Scott Perry, and Louie Gohmert had also asked for pardons.

Hutchinson stated that Trump and Meadows were informed that some attendees at the January 6 events were carrying weapons, including guns, and could not pass through magnetometers to access the rally. Trump attempted to have the magnetometers removed and stated that he didn’t care if his followers carried guns, stating, “They’re not coming to hurt me.” The committee heard police warning radio broadcasts about persons carrying weapons, including AR-15s.

Hutchinson testified that she had been informed by Tony Ornato, the then-White House deputy chief of staff, that when Trump got into the presidential SUV after his rally in an attempt to drive to the Capitol as his supporters marched there, his lead Secret Service agent Robert Engel told him it was too dangerous and informed him they were returning to the White House. Hutchinson claimed Ornato informed her that Trump grew enraged, attempted to take hold of the car’s steering wheel, and rushed at Engel’s clavicles.
She said that when Ornato described the incident, Engel was there and never disputed his statement. Three days following Hutchinson’s testimony, CNN reported that it had spoken with two Secret Service personnel who had heard stories of the event from several other personnel, including Trump’s driver, since February 2021.
