White House releases statement as Tinubu is sworn-in as Nigeria’s president

US President Joe Biden congratulated Bola Tinubu on his inauguration as President of Nigeria. Tinubu took over from Muhammadu Buhari on Monday May 29th. The inauguration ceremony, held in Abuja’s Eagle Square, brought together African leaders and global organizations.

Although Biden was not present at the inauguration, he sent a nine-person delegation to represent him at the ceremony. The delegation was led by USA Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Marcia L. Fudge. However, in a statement released by the White House, Biden congratulated Tinubu on taking office. “On behalf of the people of the United States, I extend my best wishes to the government and people of Nigeria on the inauguration of the new President,” the statement said.

“My administration has worked to strengthen the relationship between the United States and Nigeria, and I look forward to continuing this work with President Tinubu to promote economic growth, enhance security and respect for human rights “The human ties between our two countries are particularly deep and are fueled by the vibrant Nigerian diaspora in the United States. As our partnership with Nigeria deepens, I look forward to harnessing the ideas and energy of this vibrant bond between our countries even more. “As Africa’s largest democracy and economy, Nigeria’s success is the success of the world.” Elected leaders have a duty to their citizens to demonstrate that democracy can meet their needs.The United States will continue to work closely with Nigeria as a friend and partner to ensure a more peaceful and prosperous future for our world.”
